In Rosilia, Donu Koferu has seen the beginning of the fulfillment of the Dark Prophecy and sends the caretaker and her companion to find the boy who will train and teach the survivor of a brutal massacre known as The One. According to the prophecy, The One will prevent the foretold invasion of darkness in the Viverian realm.
Donu Savamu, the leader of one of eight regions in the Viverian realm, is driven to obtain a healer in another region for his ailing wife. While traveling with his four sons, they are ambushed and killed, except for Tiro. Badly wounded, Tiro is transported to the Half Moon Inn where he becomes a servant and befriends the innkeepers’ children, fraternal twins Falon and Dane. He changes his name to Tratos and with the help of his dai, he's able to hide his identity from them.
Meanwhile, soldiers infiltrate the castle where Tratos’s mother, Lari, and his baby sister are located. They escape through secret passageways and find respite with the Dorthes. However, a hired assassin, one of the best in the realm, has been paid good money to find and kill them both. Lari seeks respite with her brother, who is brutally killed by the assassin. Lari barely escapes.
Across the Dividing Mountains to the North, Andra, Lari’s sister, lives isolated from others, completely under the control of her demagogue-like husband and the artful manipulator, Mordu. Because Andra has become more resistant to Mordu’s treachery, he turns the townspeople against her as he subtly hides his nefarious acts.
Andra and Mordu have one child together, Sheerla, who is only an object to Mordu – an object to be used for pleasure or exploitation. In Andra's struggles and attempts to protect Sheerla and herself, Aris and Trumin, the cooks in Mordu’s castle, become Andra’s confidants. Because of the lifeline they offer, Mordu seeks ways to eliminate them from Andra's life in cruel ways. He imprisons them, dismembers Trumin and almost kills Aris.
Meanwhile, Tratos develops a deep relationship with Dane (who disguises herself as a boy). Dane softens toward him, teaching him special strategies in her favorite game of Five Spar. When Tratos is sent on an errand with Falon, however, Tratos never returns. Tratos is forced to face his demons, including the person who might be behind the massacre of his father and brothers.
Mordu kidnaps Sheerla, locking Andra inside the Mordian castle. Andra seeks assistance from Aris, and their journey of discovery begins. Andra quickly learns that the realm is a much different place than it was just years before. They must find Sheerla who has started to manifest her father's dai and can manipulate spirits around her.
With the imbalance created in the realm by the loss of the Savian High Family, the descendants of the Viveri family throughout the realm must learn how to use, manage or control their dais to either further or alter the Dark Prophecy and resulting chaos, death and destruction. Some are more successful than others, but, in the end, it's a game of survival for all.
